Light of God

Light of God
Come dwell within Your people
As intended
From the dawn of time
Make Your goodness
Echoed through creation
Our desire
Joy of the divine

Holy Spirit
Break through our darkness
Holy Spirit
Breathe through our lives
Light of God come
Radiant and glorious
Perfect wisdom
In this world today

The Story Behind the Song

This hymn is a prayer for goodness, truth and beauty to be in our lives and in the world around us amidst the darkness. The prayer is that our God, who is light, might banish every darkness within us, that we might be refined by His holiness, and might be in turn be light in the world around us.

Much of the metaphorical language in this hymn is inspired by the writings of CS Lewis and how he illustrated these ideas in his writing. Our good friend Dr Stan Mattson invited us to write a hymn for the CS Lewis conference this year and this is what we came up with - it is primarily a choral hymn, which also works as solo or congregationally.
